Job Description: The Wayne County Historical Museum is seeking a part-time Educational Programs Director to create, maintain, and implement educational programming for all ages at the museum and its related educational outreach opportunities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Establishing and maintaining educational programs at the museum, including but not limited to:

  • Give tours and assist with development of pre-K – 12th grade tours of the museum. This includes working closely with the volunteer coordinator and docents to insure information is current and fits the needs of the individual schools and educational groups.
  • Direct, manage, and maintain programs such as Literacy Nights, Adventure Trunks, Mummy Scavenger Hunt
  • Create and implement new programs and revitalize previous programs such as Archaeology Summer Camp, Adult Educational Speaker Series, and Where’s Your Mummy? Day
  • Assist with recruitment and oversee educational interns on various projects.
  • Work with schools by providing informational workshops to teachers and home school educators.
  • Manage outreach opportunities for schools.
  • Work closely with the Public Programs Director to identify educational opportunities in public and family programs
  • Serve as staff member for the Education Committee (once established)
  • Aid in the creation of educational labels within the exhibit spaces and in the creation of an educational collection.
  • Create hands-on programming that will reach a variety of ages and learning styles, such as tactile tours.
  • Create reports and conduct evaluations on educational programming for the museum
  • Seek out professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills
  • Assist with grant writing as it pertains to educational programs
  • Assist with curatorial projects as assigned
  • Assist as necessary with day-to day staffing and duties
  • Other Duties as assigned

 

Hours: 15 hours per week on average during regular museum hours (Monday through Friday 9 am – 4 pm) and extra hours as necessary for camps and educational programs that may occur outside of normal business hours. Some evening and weekend hours are required.

Compensation: Commensurate with experience (within the annual budget of the Museum)

Benefits: Paid holidays and 1-week paid vacation

Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate will have a background in informal education and be familiar with educational standards within a museum or informal learning setting.
  • Experience with Indiana State Education Standards, and STEM/STEAM learning.
  • Possess a bachelor’s degree or higher in museum studies, education, public history, or a similar field from an accredited university.
  • Have a positive attitude, team-based work ethic, exceptional communication and customer service skills.
  •  Possess a passion for museums as a platform for educational programs and opportunities.
  • Ability to utilize Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  Experience with PastPerfect or similar database software is a plus. Ability to assist in adding pertinent information on educational programs to the museum’s website and social media platforms
  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time, and to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Knowledge of U.S. History, specifically Indiana History with a focus on Wayne County History is a plus.
